Michael Jackson dead but Immortal

Michael JacksonWorld famous entertainer Michael Jackson has died in Los Angeles, aged 50.

Paramedics were called to the Michael Jackson’s home around midday local time on Thursday, apparently after he stopped breathing.

He was pronounced dead two hours later after arriving at hospital in full cardiac arrest, said the LA County Corner, Fred Corral.

The star, who had a history of health problems, had been due to begin a series of comeback concerts in the UK on 13 July.

Michael Jackson will be sadly missed, the stress associated with his ambitious schedule of 50 concerts may well have been too much for his heart to bear.

Michael Jackson may have died but he is immortal because the great achievements of his 45 year have been laid down on audio and visual media, which will be enjoyed forever. The King of pop lives on.

Michael Jackson will go down in history as the greatest performer of all time, he was a  fascinating character, loved by so many but understood by so few.

Despite speculation, there is no hope of a Tenerife Michael Jackson concert now. He may well have followed in the footsteps on Elton John and Rod Stewart who both performed very successful gigs in Tenerife but that is now impossible.

Immigrant boat arrives in Tenerife

Europa Press reported that today at 6.00am a cayuco boat was spotted 9 miles south of Punta Rasca in Tenerife carrying 41 immigrants on board. The boat was discovered by the Foreign Surveilance system.

The Guardia Civil patrol boat “Pico Teide” was despatched to rendezvous with the cayuco and the two boats met 4 miles off the coast. Two of the immigrants were transferred to a medical centre at El Mojon and the boat was towed to Los Cristianos Harbour where it arrived this morning. All of the other immigrants were found to be in good health.

The immigrants were taken to a reception centre so that their condition could be assessed. More information about their origin will be made available later.

Traffic Jams in Tenerife at Las Teresitas Beach

Teresitas Beach

Teresitas Beach

Last Sunday, the Santa Cruz Department of Public Safety and Transport noted a total of 16429 vehicles went to Las Teresitas beach. The result of course was massive traffic congestion. This beach only has 1165 designated parking spaces so it must have been very difficult to park.

On Sunday morning repeated warnings were given out on local radio stations advising people to use public transport. Ironically, the buses were also stuck in the traffic.

Las Teresitas beach is possibly one of the best beaches on the Island and it is just a 7kM drive from Santa Cruz, the highly populated capital city of Tenerife. The beach is obviously very popular with the locals but an increasing number of visitors are now being attracted from all over the Island.

It is a beautiful tropical designer beach with palm trees, a mountain backdrop and soft light sand imported from the Sahara Desert. Facilities are very good and it is very safe for bathing because it has man made protective sea barrier. Many say Las Teresitas beach is the best on the Island, it is a stunning location and a must place to visit.

If you are a tourist it is better to go on a weekday. Sundays are always the busiest day on Tenerife beaches.

Tenerife Timeshare Arrests

This piece of hot news was just published by Typically Spanish.

“The Interior Ministry says more than 50 people were affected and up to 1.5 million Euro defrauded.

Seven people have been arrested in a timeshare fraud on Tenerife, in a case which the Interior Ministry said would have affected more than 50 people and brought the fraudsters up to €1.5 million.

The fraud in the southern part of the island consisted in the suspects contacting the victims saying they had a purchaser interested in buying their rights to the property. Those who chose to go ahead were charged around €30,000 in taxes and the cost of transferring ownership. They heard nothing further from either their supposed buyer or the intermediary after the money had changed hands.

Officers found in a property search which took place as part of the five-month investigation banking documents, property deeds and receipts for money transfers to Senegal. The seven in custody are the holders of bank accounts where the money defrauded was paid, and are all residents of Tenerife. The Ministry has not released details of their nationalities”.

Climate Change in the Canary Islands

Climate Change

Climate Change

The Canary Islands Government have produced a report outlining their strategies to counter climate change and biodiversity loss. The report was presented to the EU in Paris last summer and it is in the public domain. The report was presented in a bullet point format and it is reproduced in this blog post.

Please also read our own comments at the foot of the post.

The Specific Challenges of Climate Change

  • Population: The total population of the Canary Islands is more than 2 million inhabitants.
  • Energy Vulnerability: “The risks and consequences associated with oil disruption are many times higher in the Canary Islands rather than in a territory in the mainland of Europe”.
  • Weather and health vulnerability: The probability is also higher of “extreme weather events” of or new infectious diseases to humans or vegetation.
  • Biodiversity loss: Overabundance of endemic wildlife and vegetation.
  • Extreme dependence of tourism. Risks associated to “supply crisis” and “global warming” gradually diverting tourism flows.
  • Climate Change and Environmental migrations: The Canary Islands would be the last outpost of the EU in the face of water and clima provoked, migration floods.

Sustainable Climate Change Strategies

  • Impact Analysis: Insufficiently developed. Most EU funded research programs (PRUDENCE,ADAM, PESETA) leave out the Canary Islands for geographical reasons.
  • Mitigation: Less potential of intense mitigation efforts (lower emissions per capita, lack of heavy industries, relatively higher energy for transport requirements).
  • Adaptation: The costs of adaptation are relatively higher, associated with the specific risks, the lower GDP per capita and the territorial fragmentation and distance from the mainland.
  • Mitigation and Adaptation are positive to reinforcing security of energy supply.
  • Potential for renewable energies: Important potential for fostering renewables (specially wind, solar and geothermal) and also to better energy rational use.
  • Laboratory of experimentation in climate change adaptation: The Canary Islands are close and suitable launching platforms for European technologies and know-how, related to climate change and renewable energies.

Facts and main impacts

  • Climatic conditions are changing.
  • Difficulty of accurate Climatic Scenarios: Because of dimension, topography, micro climes).
  • The standard grid resolution UE: 50 km (Prudence Model) or 20 km (Ensembles Model).
  • The resolution and meteorological models used in the case of the Canary islands are not so precise.

The future based on Meteorological forecasts.

  • Temperature: sea surface (+ 1ºC in 20 years). In land 2030: + 1ºC (sea level) + 2’5ºC (top mountains) 2060: + 2ºC (sea level)
  • Extreme heat waves (x 4 in 20 years) with more warmer nights (+ 35% in 20 years)
  • Humidity: + 1% a 2% every 10 years
  • Winds: Shifting direction (more high pressure weather conditions) and appearance of tropical storms.
  • Rain: – 20% in 2025 (with a higher incertitude).

The expected main impacts of Climate Change in the Canary Islands

  • Temperature Rise: Moderate in the medium to long term
  • Less Rain: High probability in the medium to long term
  • Sea level rise: High probability in the medium to long term
  • More extreme events: Moderate in the short to long term
  • Tropical diseases: Moderate in the medium to long term
  • Impacts on biodiversity: High probability in the medium to long term
  • Higher transport costs: High probability in the short to long term

Greenhouse gas emmisions by sector during 2005

  • Energy 94.4%
    • Electricity production and oil refining: 52.5%
    • Land Transport: 27.9%
    • Air Transport: 5%
    • Maritime Transport: 1.6%
    • Other Sectors: 7.4%
  • Industrial Processes: 1.8%
  • Solvent Uses: 0.7%
  • Agricultural Uses: 3.1%
  • Land use and reforestation: -3.5% (Negative)
  • Waste: 3.5%

It is forecast that a “business as usual approach” will result in an 89% increase on the 1990 figures by 2015. Even so, greenhouse gas emissions per capita will still be 60% of the average level of the 27 EU member states.

Compromises and Strategies: What are the Canary Islands doing

It is planned to concentrate highly on the energy and waste sectors to redress the balance by 2015, as follows:

  • Energy: 89.2%
  • Industrial Processes: 1.4%
  • Solvent Uses: 0.1%
  • Agricultural Uses: 0.1%
  • Land Use and reforestation: 0.3%
  • Waste: 7.0%

A summary of measures to meet these targets

  • Towards a “greener taxation” promoting mitigation and sustainability.
  • Extensive R+D program:
    • Focusing on Climate Change impacts. Promoting energy technologies adapted to local conditions. In depth studies on local biodiversity safeguarding. Adaptation models and patterns
    • Reinforcing international cooperation of local Universities and research centers
    • Information and education: From “cradle to grave”.
    • Schools, universities, media and social groups educational active involvement.

Challenges and Obstacles

  • Most of the emmisions are linked to basic social needs, (electricity, transport and  water) or related to tourist activities.
  • A hisotrical extensive use of territory with an induced strong mobility demand.
  • High Vulnerability (environmental, economy and social)
  • High adaption costs ( remoteness, geographical conditions and few locally produced raw materials.

Social Attitudes

  • Enery use reduction associated with loss of quality of life.
  • A large number of public administrations involved.
  • The need to mobilise and change public attitudes.

Monitoring and updating the strategy

  • Produce an annual report.
  • Carry out a detailed regional inventory of greenhouse gas emissions every two years.
  • Update the strategy every 4 years of as circumstances dictate.

The EU Government have agreed extend the results of studies to include the Canary Islands. They have also created a regional fund for the Canary Islands to cover the cost of adaption. They also propose to use the Canary Islands to experiment with European technology related to renewable energy and climate change mitigation. Tenerife has already gone some way towards experimenting with wind and solar energy.

Tenerife Banana Exports

Tenerife Banana exports to the Spanish Peninsula have been cut to prevent further price reductions.

A decision was made to hold back banana exports this month in a late attempt to prevent price falls. The market had become oversaturated.

Apparently, 300,000 kilos of bananas have been donated to the World Food Bank to avoid the need to place them in storage. It would seem that Canarian farmers would rather give away the bananas than sell them cheap. Hopefully the World Food Bank will be able to make good use of the bananas.

Suspected Mass Graves in Tenerife near Mounte Teide

The Spanish Government has been continuing investigations into crimes which took place during 1936 under the Franco dictatorship. The regional authorities have been reviewing claims that there may be mass graves near Mount Teide.

Permission has been given by the Teide National Park, now a world heritage site, for excavations to be carried out providing that every care is taken not to interfere with the park environment.

Research has indicated that there is a mass grave or a number of mass graves somewhere at 2500 metres above sea level between El Portillo and the entrance to the park from La Oratova and Izana. It is believed the remains of of dissident local politicians who refused to support General Franco will be found including the Mayor of Santa Cruz and the Mayor of Buenavista.

Tenerife Summer Fire Risk

Now that summer is upon us the Tenerife Government is taking measure to reduce the high risk of forest fires. They are all to aware of the risks, it has taken two years for forested areas to recover following the devastating forest fires which ravaged the south of the Island during the summer of 2007.

Additional teams of firefughters will be deployed around the Island to be on hand should a fire break out. They will be based in a number of high risk spots between now and the 15th October. Last year there was only one serious fire and 30 minor incidents which is attributed to a similar risk management exercise being carried out last year.

The massive fires of 2007 were attributed to arsonists, particularly in the Los Realjos area and the fear remains that they may make further attempts this year.

Air Europa Miami Tenerife Inaugural Flight

Tomorrow the first direct scheduled flight form Miami will be arriving in Tenerife which signals the the start of a new era. Tenerife may well see a significant increase in tourism from the United States. Miami has a very diverse culture and is not dissimilar to Tenerife in that respect with a large hispanic population.  There are also bound to be some family ties between the two locations.

By all accounts flght sales have been going extremely well which is a firm indicator that the new venture will be successful.

The inaugural flight will bring twenty business owners, politicians and journalists from Miami headed by Commisioner Rebecca Sosa and Mayor Carlos Alvarez. They are coming to assess the new tourist and business prospects which are now open due to the new flight schedule.

Growing numbers of foreigners in the Canary Islands

A recent census showed that the population of the Canary Islands has risen to 2.1 million. Of those, 300.000 are foreigners which equates to 15% of the population.

These figures are not surprising with many expats immigrating to enjoy the favourable climate and lay back lifestyle. Tenerife now has 91,584 EU nationals living on the Island which accounts for the enormous diversity of culture on the Island.
