Internet Marketing SEO Search Engine Optimisation
We would say that it is much easier to design a website and undertake SEO (search engine optimisation) at the same time. We learned that building our second website having spent so much time adjusting my first website to dovetail it with SEO. We are Tenerife Estate Agents with a very keen interest in SEO as well as the Tenerife property market.
In terms of search engine optimisation, there are a number of very important factors which affect organic traffic growth. From our own experience we have produced a shorlist of the main factors:
On Page Optimisation
- You need to give consideration to choice of keywords. Carry out detailed research and look at you competitors sites so that you can target keywords which will bring traffic to your website.
- You can use different keywords for each page, each page should target one main keyword, or keyword phrase, with other secondary keywords which relate to the main keword. You can always add keywords and other optimised web pages later.
- Don’t miss out on any keyword opportunities.
- Choosing your domain name is important, ideally you need your main targeted keyword in the domain name. eg. your home page may be wuuw.expediatenerifeproperty.com if you were targeting “Tenerife Property” as a keyword.
- Other web pages with a long tail URL’s such as wuuw.expediatenerifeproperty.com/los_cristianos_property_properties_apartments_villas.htm could be used to target the keyword “Los Cristianos Property“, and so on. The keywords need to be at the correct percentage in the URL’s.
- The meta descriptions for each web page need to be keyword rich but overdone which would be considered spammy.
- Each page needs to use keywords in the text at the correct percentage.
- The homepage needs to have text links to the inner pages using anchor text. e.g “Los Cristianos Property”
There should be text links from the inner pages to other inner pages using anchor text, a linking strategy needs to be developed and implemented. - Each page needs to use H1/H2/H3 headers which are titles using selected keywords.
- The percentage of keyword use is important in all these aspects. You need to evaluate those percentages which are acceptable by reviewing competitors web pages. Maximum possible keyword use is required for best optimisation.
- When the site is complete add a sitemap and submit it to the major search engines.
Off Page Optimisation
- Each web page needs incoming links from other websites such as directory links, I normally use directories, forums etc but you may have friends and associates with websites who may exchange links with you, the other alternative is soliciting link exchanges via an email campaign. You need about 100 inbound links using all of the keywords.
- Without incoming links, the search engines will display the results of others with more links, this is a confidence thing, websites with links are more trusted. I recommend only setting up links with websites that already have a Page Rank of 3 or more to avoid page rank dilution.
- Each incoming link to each page should use the keywords for anchor text. The anchor text needs to be varied and balanced.
- Social networking is another important factor using Digg, Reddit, Tecnorati etc. Submitting the pages to social websites breeds search engine confidence.
- You need to have a few outgoing links, preferably using your keywords as anchor text.
- You might like to consider starting a blog, such as the one you are reading. Every blog post provides valuable links back to the main website by means of links in the signature.
- Article writing is another way of gaining links.
The whole point of off page optimisation is to get in the same position as your competitors and gain their traffic as your search engine ranking positions improve. This stage can take many months because the search engines expect to see natural growth. There is no quick fix and you don’t want to get banned by moving at a greater than organic pace.
Obviously our list is not exhaustive, there are a few other factors which affect SERPs. (Search Engine Ranking Position). Many in the world of SEO will not go as far as we have to achieve organic success. If anyone offers you less then there is a good chance it will not work, how many times have you heard that story?.
We conduct our own in house SEO and Internet Marketing campaigns. Our results have been impressive, for example for the highly searched term, “Tenerife Estate Agents” we are in first position on Yahoo and second position on Bing. We are knocking on the door of Google page one and expect to be in the top 5 when the results of our link building bear fruit.

Hi
Some of what you write is accurate and should also be part of a standard design package without the client asking the designer.
However, some points (especially point 5 from On Page Optimisation) are so wrong it will actually be creating pages, sub folders and links that Google will simply ignore.
You are working in one of the most competative markets available in Tenerife so I am impressed with your organic ranking for the phrase “Tenerife Estate Agents” and with only 3 internal links indexed by Google and over 300 pages this will improve over time.
Things you might like to consider…
1. The percentage of users who use Google as aposed to other search engines
2. Click through rates for the various positions in the SER
3. Other methods of optimisation in addition to key phrases and landing pages
On the whole a very good article and if the innacuracies were to be removed it would be a good reference source for people starting out in SEO.
Thanks.

Hi Michael,
Thank you for taking the time to read my post and commenting.
With regard to point 5, I have actually created long tail URL’s and they are not ignored by Google, I have many links into those pages and they are ranked and returning traffic. e.g Los Cristianos Property We are on Google Page 1 for that search term.
Many people say the Google back link tool is not 100% but you are correct in what you say. We do have 286 links on Yahoo and 305 on all the Web and this is increasing all the time.
From my own experience I think the Google share is around 80% in terms of search engine popularity. I am going to be looking at click through rates, thank you.
Thank you for you valued comments, I not sure that my article is inaccurate because what I have said worked for me.
Kind Regards.

That’s interesting…
It goes against Google’s own data so I’m interested in why they are indexing a page the way you say when they clearly say they don’t.
But then again, Google tends to change the way it inexes from time to time…

Hello Micheal,
When I first researched SEO I would have agreed with you but I was experimenting with IBP software when I discovered it. I did some more research and discovered others were using the technique successfully so I decided to go that way. It is not only Google that index pages in this way and, as you say things do change all the time.

Hi
Just installed and played with IBP and it appears to be a reasonable tool for end users.

IBP is such a amazing tool, it takes a while to get to grips with it but, for me it is an essential too for on page optimisation. I also use it for link building, it is great because you can export links into other projects if you use the business edition. The starter edition only allows you to work on one project. You can also use it to check your SERP’s for each page but be careful because Google does not like automated interrogation software. Great also for search engine submission.
Another piece of sofware by the same company is “Link Popularity Check”. You can check your links from each search engine to each URL. That is free software by the way but it is a marketing lead in to buying IBP of course. I have found that IBP is worth every penny, it is so organised. Glad to be of help.
