Restaurant Margarita Los Cristianos Tenerife

Restaurant MargaritaRestaurant Margarita is something of a local landmark in Los Cristianos, Tenerife, having been so successful it remained unopened for two years, apparently for personal reasons. In July 2010 the restaurant was taken over by new owners who saw the true potential of this restaurant. It has a large but private terrace with an outside BBQ near the entrance, which makes it very difficult to pass it by if you are feeling hungry. The BBQ really is a piece of art, it looks like something fabricated from a sketch drawn by Leonardo Da Vinci.

Inside there are attractive dining areas, a bar area and an upper gallery, not something which you would imagine when looking from the outside. Restaurant Margarita is the image of classyvenue for private parties and would make an ideal venue for a wedding reception. Tenerife is not exactly overwhelmed with suitable and affordable places to host a private party or a wedding reception.

Restaurant Margarita in Los Cristianos is open 7 days a week 365 days per year serving breakfast, snacks and evening meals. The bar is open all day for coffee, drinks & cocktails so if you fancy a nice chilled drink(s) you can just call in. You can even bring your swimming costume because there is pool par upstairs which is also part of the Restaurant Margarita.

The restaurant serves a vast range of home-cooked local Canarian cuisine and also English dishes, Pizza, Pasta, Paellas, and the BBQ is certainly not to be missed. The food is available to take-away, something which is very popular with the locals. The cellar also stocks a vast range of Wines, Spirits and Cocktails.

With Free Wi-fi and designated non-smoking areas, Restaurant Margarita caters for everyone. It is a great location for a business meeting, especially if you need internet access.

Restaurant Margarita is  located opposite the Cristian Sur Hotel, with the Tenerife Sur, Aguamar and Parque Margarita complex all very very close by.

Tel: 0034 922 753 172 and ask for Eddie or Ali. Visit the Restaurant Margarita Facebook page and read the reviews for yourself.

Swimming at Ten Bel in Tenerife

Ten Bel Swimming PanoramicTen Bel is an older style development on the Costa del Silencio side of Las Galletas. Some would say it is not a very pleasant development but it has more amenities than many other tourist locations in Tenerife. Firstly it is easy to get to by public transport, it has a bus station hub with frequent services to most locations. You can walk to the Ten Bel Alborada from Las Galletas in a few minutes.

It has a large shopping complex with all types of shops but the amazing thing about Ten Bel is the beach and man-made salt water swimming pool, which is really a massive lagoon with an enclose swimmming area of 3200 square metres, sometimes referred to as “the whale”. It is a humongous swimming pool.

Take a walk along the coastal path over the cliffs and there are several paths down to the sea for some alternative swimming.

The area is very popular with tourists who enjoy swimming and there are many holiday apartments on the seaside of Ten Bel.

Costa Martiánez Swimming Pool Complex Puerto de La Cruz

Costa Martianez Pool Puerto de la CruzTenerife was developing for tourism in the north far before the south of the island became a magnet for tourism with the advent of the jet age.

Puerto de La Cruz became centre stage for one of the most ambitious swimming pool projects, known as the municipal swimming pool complex of Costa Martiánez. A team of experts were appointed headed by Cesar Manrique, a famous Architect from Lanzarote.

Completion of this project left Puerto de la Cruz with one of the most admired coastal developments in the world. You have to see it to appreciate how it blends perfectly into its surroundings complete with native plants and original sculptures.

The man-made lake in the Costa Martianez swimming pool complex contains 27,000 litres of sea water and there are four adult swimming pools and three children’s pools. It truly is a remarkable project, the jewel of Puerto de la Cruz.

It is a social centre, an early tourist theme park, complete with bars, restaurants, stalls and there is even a nightclub below sea level. It is a stunning attraction to say the least and a reminder of what can be achieved using mostly natural resources.

Another new beach for Alcala in Tenerife

The Spanish government have pledged three million Euros to build a new beach and promenade at La Jaquita (Alcala). Plans to beuild the new beach and promenade have been approved, and the local council says it is hoping to award the contract during the next few weeks.

Mayor Pedro Martín says the new beach at Alcala will complement Playa San Juan, where a tourist information office has recently opened. Play San Juan has grown from a small fishing village to a chic lay back resort since the new beach was constructed there. The new beach at Alcala will strengthen Guía de Isora’s case to be formally designated a tourist town, which will bring more public investment and help local businesses thrive. The project is the second to be undertaken in La Jaquita during the last few years, following the extensive work done to the seafront stretch during 2007.

This is good new for Tenerife Property buyers in Playa San Juan and Alcala where throngs of Brits are increasingly in evidence. Property is still cheap in this area but prices are set to rise along with tourist popularity. There is already a strong holiday rental market in Playa San Juan. During the winter is is popular with northern Europeans and during the summer it is also popular with tourists from mainland Spain.

All inclusive in Tenerife

Another large hotel chain has just announced the opening of a new all inclusive superior hotel in Tenerife. The hotel claims to continue the tradition of providing unique vacation experiences, rooted in superior customer service and quality, in the world’s most popular tourist destinations.

The hotel chain say they are expanding their offering in Tenerife to cater to both families and luxury travelers with the addition of the new hotel.

All inclusive hotels claim to offer the experience of the highest level of service, quality, cuisine and amenities. For properties that are all-inclusive, the experience sometimes includes tips and taxes, food and beverages, non-motorized water sports, entertainment and resort activities.

All inclusive seems to be a growing trend amongst hotel chains, many local businesses suffer because of this growing insular form of tourism. More should be done to encourage free activities outside of these all inclusive resort hotels. Tourists wearing coloured wrist bands are less likely to boost the economy of Tenerife because they have already paid for everything before departing on their holidays.

Maybe something should be done to limit the new brand of all inclusive tourism before it completely strangles local businesses. These local businesses add variety to the Tenerife tourism experience, empty bars and restaurants will hardly focus the spotlight on Tenerife as a popular tourist destination.

Tenerife tourist are of course free to leave these all inclusive resort complexes but, from what the locals are saying, businesses are already being squeezed out by this modern trend. Will these top hotels chains still be able to claim Tenerife is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the future?

Current Canary Islands Tourism Statistics – September 2009

A bleak picture has been painted today by the four major tourism sector employers in the Canary Islands this week.

The Canary Islands has lost 15% of their normal tourist numbers compared with the same period last year which is a dramatic decline. Last year the Canary Islands received over 9.2 million visitors so that represents a fall of 1.38 million tourists. Occupancy rates are well down and people are not staying as long to reduce their costs.

The Canary Islands have a fragile economy principally supported by tourism, so this news is a major setback for the Islands. It is estimated that 50,000 jobs could be lost as businesses find it harder to cut costs.

If you look at the economics, an average tourist visiting the Canary Islands will spend around €60 Euros per day on the Islands. Multiply that by the number of lost visitors that is an 83 million Euro shortfall in business, every day.

The statistics also reveal a 13-20% reduction in the number of flight slots over the coming months which signals that things are not set to improve. As a result, many employers will have no choice but to reduce staff numbers.

President Zapatero of Spain is due to visit the region shortly and everyone is hoping he will completely remove airport taxes to stimulate the number of visitors to the Canary Islands. Airport taxes have already been reduced but it does not seem to have had much effect to date.

Currently, Canarian residents enjoy a discount on flights to Spain and the tourism sector is now pushing for a reciprocal arrangement for residents from mainland Spain. This would attract more visitors from the Iberian Peninsula at a time when they are desperately needed.

Unemployment levels in the Canary Island have already risen dramatically over the past 12 months and rising levels will place an even heavier burden on the Government in terms of benefit payments. If unemployment levels reach 30%, which is quite possible, it will cost them 300 million Euros per month in unemployment benefits, significantly more that the lost revenue from abolishing airport taxes.

Over the past year the Government has been well aware that tourist numbers have been falling yet they seem to have done very little to resolve the problem. Perhaps any measures the Government make now will be too late to be effective because the airlines have already began their withdrawal. There is a more time lag in tourism than any other industry because of pre-booking and change takes time to implement.

Perhaps the Government should not only abolish airport tax but pay a reverse subsidy to encourage the airlines. The airlines and travel industry will target destinations where they can be competitive and offer good value, otherwise they cannot be profitable in the current climate.

The Canary Islands could be considered a medium haul destination so airlines cannot offer massive discounts because of fuel costs. That is why flights to the Islands are expensive and why the tourists have been going elsewhere.

The real victims of this failure are the residents, most of who depend on tourism for their livelihood.
