Tenerife was developing for tourism in the north far before the south of the island became a magnet for tourism with the advent of the jet age.
Puerto de La Cruz became centre stage for one of the most ambitious swimming pool projects, known as the municipal swimming pool complex of Costa Martiánez. A team of experts were appointed headed by Cesar Manrique, a famous Architect from Lanzarote.
Completion of this project left Puerto de la Cruz with one of the most admired coastal developments in the world. You have to see it to appreciate how it blends perfectly into its surroundings complete with native plants and original sculptures.
The man-made lake in the Costa Martianez swimming pool complex contains 27,000 litres of sea water and there are four adult swimming pools and three children’s pools. It truly is a remarkable project, the jewel of Puerto de la Cruz.
It is a social centre, an early tourist theme park, complete with bars, restaurants, stalls and there is even a nightclub below sea level. It is a stunning attraction to say the least and a reminder of what can be achieved using mostly natural resources.
