Have you been to a Tenerife Guachinche?

A Guachinche is a basic no frills restaurant which serves traditional country food. Do not expect lavish surroundings but what you will get is good food at a very affordable price. Popular with the locals most Guachinches will be found in the North of the Island, they are not widely publicized and they are usually off the beaten track.
We visited a Guachinche known as El Nervioso just of the motorway near Tenerife’s north airport known as Los Rodeos. It was Sunday lunchtime and we walked into a large refectory type dining area with a bar at the end, talk about hustle and bustle. The seating capacity must have been close to a hundred. We took our delicatessen style number ticket and enjoyed a drink at the bar while we waited for our number to be displayed on a monitor. There was a menu on the wall near the bar and an endless stream of plates passed as waitresses served the punters.
We had to wait about 15 minutes but at least we had the opportunity of seeing most types of food passing from kitchen to table whilst we waited. We ordered a starter which was a delicious oily vegetable and flour puree served with Mojo sauces, fresh bread and corn on the cob. For main course we had fillets steaks or grilled fish served with boiled Canarian potatoes or fries. The steaks were amazing, as if they had been marinated for days and the fish was cooked to perfection. For desert there was a massive selection of cakes or trifles served with cream. The menu was quite varied including most types of meat.
We enjoyed some local red wine with our meal which was served from stainless steel vats and even with a critical slant we found no fault. The staff were amazingly friendly and even though they were busy they took time to explain all the different plates to us.
The atmosphere was lively with several birthday parties being celebrated and the bill for a three course meal including drinks was 12-15 Euros per head for a great deal of food.
El Nervisio is at Del Socorro 250, 38280 Tegueste. Tel : 922638050
Others yet to try are La Carambola in El Sauzal, El Drakkar in Santa Cruz and Casa Tomas in El Portezuelo.
We discovered El Nervioso by asking the locals about Guachinches in La Laguna. We could do with a few of these to boost Tenerife tourism in the South.
